FYI Diabetes is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. We take no pharmaceutical money and receive no government funding — every dollar raised goes directly to the science. Our current focus is research with Dr. Rinat Esenaliev at UTMB Galveston, testing whether non-invasive focused ultrasound can prompt the pancreas to regenerate the beta cells that produce insulin. It is the bridge from a promising idea to the FDA pathway toward human trials.

Type 1 diabetes is really two problems. A complete cure has to solve both — and for the first time, both are being pursued in parallel.
Stop the attack
The immune system mistakenly destroys insulin-producing cells. Research on immune-resetting approaches (building on Dr. Denise Faustman's work at Massachusetts General Hospital) aims to quiet that attack.
Rebuild the cells
This is the half FYI Diabetes funds. Building on a landmark 2023 study, our UTMB research tests whether focused ultrasound can regenerate beta cells non-invasively — no genetic modification, no surgery.
